Unboxing the SuperPhone
The Huawei Mate 30 RS was a highly anticipated device, and when it arrived, the first thing I did was unbox it. The retail packaging was as premium as one would expect for a device that cost close to $2,500. Inside, I found the wall-e sized device, as well as a limited edition black version of the 40 watt super charger, a USB-C cable to charge the phone, and a second USB-C cable. The second cable was included because the device also came with Huawei’s new car charger, which supports 40 watt charging and has a second port to charge a second phone. The car charger also has an LED ring around it to make it visible in the dark.
Additional Accessories
In addition to the charger, the device also came with a pair of earphones, a box containing the Porsche Design Smartphone Case, a packet with the SIM ejector tool, and a couple of manuals. The Mate 30 RS is the starting point for the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, and it certainly did not disappoint.
Design and Build Quality

The SuperPhone comes with 8 gigabytes of RAM, which has been increased to 12, and 256 gigs of storage, which has been increased to 512. It also features a faster chipset and better materials than the standard Mate 30 Pro. I tested the phone’s performance with some games, and it handled them without any issues. The 4K video is capped at 30 frames per second, but the stabilization was impressive.
Battery Life
The SuperPhone has had a few updates since launch to improve its features, including battery life. I kept track of the battery life indicator as I went about my day, and it held up well. I was able to do all the things I wanted to do without having to worry about the battery running out.
The Shopping Centre
At 130 in the afternoon, I arrived at the shopping centre with my new $2,500 SuperPhone. I was eager to test out its features, particularly the dual view recording capability. Finding a Gift

After a few minutes of deliberation, I decided on a dimmable lamp. With a single tap of the base, the light would brighten up.
Testing the Phone
I wanted to take advantage of the SuperPhone’s video capability, so I used the lamp as an excuse to test it out in a medium-lit environment. The phone had the option to record at 7600 x 80 frames per second, which was wildly unconventional, but it worked.
Huawei Mate 30 Pro
After buying the lamp, I decided to test out the phone’s throwing capabilities. The Huawei Mate 30 Pro had a feature that allowed me to throw it like a boomerang. I was impressed with how well the phone flew and how stable it was when it landed on a flat surface.
Custom Software
The SuperPhone also had custom software, skin and wallpapers. I liked the base colors, but didn’t really like the clash with the colors of the normal icons and the rest of the UI.
The Shopping Trip
We had just finished shopping and the sun was setting, creating a beautiful backdrop. We decided to head to a nearby rooftop to get a better view of Nottingham. We stumbled upon a bustling Christmas market and knew it was the perfect place to test the capabilities of the $2,500 SuperPhone.
Testing the Phone
We started taking pictures and videos with the phone, using different zoom magnifications. The phone’s low-light video capabilities were impressive, with the footage coming out clean and well-exposed. The background blur was also remarkable, considering the number of tiny light sources around the market. We even managed to take a few portrait mode shots.
Unique Features
The SuperPhone had a few unique features that we noticed. For instance, there was an automatic step counter on the lock screen and an auto rotation feature that rotated the content based on the orientation of the user’s eyes, rather than the phone itself. This meant that even if the phone was rotated but the user’s head stayed straight, the content would still rotate because it was being viewed from a different angle.

Side by Side Video Comparison
Prior to my return home to engage in some gaming, I conducted a side by side video comparison between the Samsung Galaxy fold and the $2,500 SuperPhone. The results were quite impressive, as the SuperPhone was able to pick up the lights of passing cars with greater clarity.
Battery Life
Upon returning home, the battery level of the SuperPhone was at 39%. Despite having used the device for 5.5 hours with the screen on, and having used it as a Wi-Fi hotspot for an hour and a half, the battery life was still quite impressive.
No Notch
Interestingly, the 2018 limited edition Porsche Design Mate RS Porsche refused to add a notch to their phone, despite it being based on the P20 Pro which had one. However, with the Mate 30 RS Porsche, they have allowed the notch, but have designed wallpapers to try and mask it.
Benchmarking
I was curious to see how the SuperPhone would perform in a benchmark test, given that it uses the Kirin 995G chip which is built on a better manufacturing process than the standard 990. The results were quite impressive, with the SuperPhone achieving 8000 points higher than the standard 990, even when factoring in the extra four gigabytes of RAM.
