Charging

When each of the three smartphones were plugged into their respective original adapters, it was evident that the Samsung S10+ was the coolest of the three. The OnePlus 7 Pro was somewhere in the middle, with an evenly distributed heat. After the 10 minute mark, the same trend was observed, albeit more exaggerated. The Samsung S10+ stayed the coolest, while the Huawei P30 Pro was the hottest. According to the scale on the left, the OnePlus 7 Pro was hovering around 40 degrees Celsius, the Galaxy S10+ was a little cooler at 37 degrees, and the Huawei P30 Pro was reaching 45 degrees.

Power Levels

The three phones charged with three different power levels – the OnePlus 7 Pro with 30 watts, the Galaxy S10+ with 15 watts, and the Huawei with 40 watts. This explains the varying levels of heat generated by each device. The higher the power level, the more heat was generated.

High Performance Mode

The OnePlus 7 Pro, Samsung S10+ and Huawei P30 Pro were all tested in their respective high performance modes. Upon loading up Instagram, the phones began to heat up quickly, with the concentration of heat shifting from the surrounding environment to the devices themselves. Within minutes, the phones were noticeably warmer than their surroundings.

Gaming Performance

To further test the phones, a 3D game called Full Metal Monsters was loaded up. The Huawei P30 Pro was the hottest of the three, reaching temperatures of nearly 40 degrees Celsius. The Samsung S10+ was slightly cooler at around 37-38 degrees Celsius, while the OnePlus 7 Pro was the coolest at around 35 degrees Celsius.

4K Video Performance

The phones were then tested with 4K video, with no breaks in between. The Huawei P30 Pro was again the hottest, reaching temperatures of up to 42 degrees Celsius. The Samsung S10+ was slightly cooler at around 39 degrees Celsius, while the OnePlus 7 Pro was the coolest at around 36 degrees Celsius.

The OnePlus 7 Pro, Samsung S10+ and Huawei P30 Pro were put to the test to determine which device overheats the most. Video recording was used to assess the temperature of each device, and the results showed that the Huawei P30 Pro reached 47 degrees Celsius at its hottest point. This heat was concentrated towards the top of the phone, where the storage and chip are housed. Even light usage caused the phones to become quite warm.

Benchmarking

To push the CPU and GPU to their limits, 3DMark benchmarking software was installed on each phone. The intensive Ice Storm Extreme benchmark was run four times, followed by the even more demanding Slingshot Extreme benchmark a few times. The results showed that the Samsung S10+ started to heat up quickly, with the Exynos-based model being particularly prone to overheating.

The OnePlus 7 Pro, Samsung S10+ and Huawei P30 Pro all feature different chipsets; the Snapdragon chip on the OnePlus, the Exynos on the Galaxy and the Kirin on the Huawei. The performance of these chipsets was tested using the Slingshot benchmark, with the OnePlus 7 Pro overtaking the Samsung S10+ in terms of heat generated. The OnePlus 7 Pro reached temperatures of 50 degrees Celsius, while the Samsung S10+ was slightly cooler at 42 degrees.

Heat Distribution

The heat generated by the OnePlus 7 Pro was concentrated on the top right of the phone, making it uncomfortable to hold. The Samsung S10+ was also hot, but the heat was distributed more evenly across the phone. The Huawei P30 Pro, although still hot, was more comfortable to hold due to its curved edges which allowed the heat to dissipate more quickly.

Testing with and without Cases

The thermal performance of the three phones can also be tested with and without cases. This would provide an insight into how the cases affect the heat generated by the phones.
